Hello. My name is Drew (Andrew) A. Johnston; I was born and raised in the small town of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. I always had an eye for colourful art and photography, I got more involved with art classes taking on large mural productions of situations affecting the student body as a whole and making a subtle but impactful meaning with our images. They were not just works of art they were telling you the blunt truth.
I taught myself most of my graphic & web design knowledge, I read online tutorials, books, magazines and also by trial and error. I attended Nova Scotia Community College for a two-year “Applied Arts and Graphic Design” program where I felt right at home, this was not just my hobby but my passion. With my own self taught foundation in visual & creative arts, it paved the way for my success as a Professional Photographer and Graphic Designer today.
In fact, I started this website in high-school in 2003 (different domain-name at the time – ‘Crazy-Drew.com’), where I showcased my work online for my student body and also building my Portfolio for NSCC for acceptance. Throughout the years this website has changed quite a bit, from my dedicated online portfolio, then my blog posts (Even before Facebook), to my world travel photo blog, and is now a collaboration of all together.
I couldn’t be more proud that I have been able to turn my life’s passion into such a successful career. I currently work as a full time Graphic Designer & new product creation designer at Foamworx. We specialize in custom promotional items such as foam hands, wavers, 3D EVA puzzles and much, much more.
I currently operate a photography & graphic design company known as ‘Drew Johnston Photography & Design’ from my home as a secondary job. Not having a permanent studio does not hinder my creative ability or calibre of work in any way, I would much rather use what nature has given us as a backdrop to make my photos more natural, un-filtered and spontaneous.
Many of my art/designs can be seen as posters, murals, apparel and print. I have designed Wharf Rat Rally’s apparel line in the past, which included t-shirts, tank-tops, bandanas, sweaters and zip-hoodies. I have also designed numerous play & show posters/logos for Kings Theatre, for their in house productions.
I try to capture all aspects of life in my photography, the good, bad, funny and sad times. Those moments in time can always be remembered in a great photograph. To me, my photography is much more than great portraits and picturesque landscapes. I want to truly capture my subjects unique qualities, personality and emotion. To me nothing is more priceless than capturing a great photo that you see and instantly get a sense of what that person is like.
